Welcome to another edition of Care for Kids’ nonprofit spotlight, where we shine a light on organizations in Lucas County, Ohio, that are making a profound impact on the lives of our children. This month, we’re proud to feature two local organizations that will receive coats as part of our annual Care for Kids Coat Drive, happening October 15 through December 8.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo: Nurturing Holistic Development

Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo have been steadfast advocates for youth in our community for over a century. Serving more than 5,000 children annually, their dedication goes well beyond meeting basic needs; they focus on holistic development through mentorship, education, and community support.

Operating out of seven local clubs, the organization offers a wide range of programs that embody their “Great futures start here” motto. These initiatives focus on leadership, academic achievement, health, and character development. Further strengthening their impact, they maintain strong relationships with families and strategically collaborate with Toledo Public Schools. Their active community engagement, exemplified by their work with Care for Kids, also plays a crucial role.

Billy Mann, a representative from Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo, reflects on their partnership with Care for Kids, stating, “Our collaboration has been transformative. It’s not just about the coats, but the partnership has amplified our resources, allowing us to touch the lives of even more children.”

Beyond the tangible warmth of the coats, Boys & Girls Clubs lay the foundation for children’s development, providing mentorship, education, and the assurance of a supportive community. Mann adds, “When we come together as a community for our children, the impact is truly heartwarming.”

Susie’s Coats for Kids: 16 Years of Compassion

For 16 years, Susie’s Coats for Kids has been a beacon of compassion and support in Toledo. Founded by Susan Perry, who experienced childhood homelessness, this organization understands the challenges impoverished children face. Susan’s own struggles drove her to initiate Susie’s Coats for Kids, providing warmth, safety, and security to vulnerable children during the cold months.

“I know firsthand how an impoverished child lives. Something as simple as a winter coat out of their reach can lead to insecurity, hopelessness, and embarrassment,” shares Susan, explaining her motivation.

The organization’s inception began humbly but quickly expanded due to the immense need. Today, Susie’s Coats hosts an annual warm apparel distribution day where children choose coats, hats, and gloves in a dignified indoor environment. This commitment extends beyond an event; Susie’s Coats provides warm apparel throughout the winter with a single phone call, emphasizing a personalized approach.

Each child served receives a new coat and winter accessories, promoting dignity and warmth. Susie’s Coats stands out for its face-to-face service, demonstrating its exceptional dedication. With the support of Susan’s family, friends, and Northwest Ohio’s community, Susie’s Coats has distributed over 50,000 warm apparel items, making a tangible difference in children’s lives.

Expressing her gratitude for Care for Kids’ advocacy, Susan says, “Their generosity is helping us make a real difference in the lives of our children. When our children are warm, they feel secure, fueling hope for a brighter future.”
