Care for Kids is a philanthropic hub and collaborative giving platform that aims to improve the lives of children in need by connecting mission-minded individuals and companies with local charities. We understand that resources are limited and we want to make the most significant impact possible. By collaborating and pooling our resources, we hope to support transformational change.
Our team collaborates to identify and select the most effective nonprofits that prioritize children’s needs. Our committee consists of nonprofit leaders and social service experts who conduct research and identify the organizations doing the best work. We then allocate pooled donations and grants to where the need is greatest. By joining forces with other individuals, companies, and foundations, you can ensure that your donation has a far-reaching impact.

Our commitment to philanthropy began over 30 years ago when our founding members established a foundation in their name. Both then and now, our mission remains unwavering: to improve the lives of children in our community. Our goal has been to create a lasting, positive impact on present and future generations through outreach, donations and in-kind services.
Throughout the past three decades, we have championed numerous significant initiatives. These include granting scholarships to deserving students, providing housing to those affected by domestic violence, organizing food and clothing drives, participating in inner-city youth programs, offering support for after-school tutoring and mentorship programs, and financing local philanthropic and ad-hoc outreach efforts. Nevertheless, our aspirations have always extended further.

Each category showcases unique opportunities for either you or your company to get involved. Below, we offer specific examples from past events to inspire you. Your involvement truly counts, and together, we can create a brighter future for the children in our community.
There are several ways to show your support for local organizations that are doing important work right here in our community.
Clean-Up Days: Make an in-kind donation to Bethany House, or volunteer to help with maintenance tasks and general upkeep, such as deep cleaning, washing walls, mopping common areas, and assisting with outdoor projects and clean up. Our team has assisted with general lawn and grounds maintenance.
Meal Packaging: In a short span of just a few hours, a small group can assemble over 3,000 meals for the Children’s Hunger Alliance. This significant effort translates into substantial savings for the organization. Every year, we dedicate time to this meal packaging initiative. But our commitment doesn’t end there. We also partner with Connecting Kids to Meals, putting together meal kits. These kits include shelf-stable foods, plasticware, trays, and condiments. By volunteering just a few hours, you can substantially reduce labor costs for the organization, resulting in savings of thousands of dollars per kit.
Build a House, Playhouse or Bed: Collaborate with Habitat for Humanity to provide someone with a forever home. Engage with Maumee Valley Habitat for Humanity to construct a playhouse for families in Lucas County who need affordable housing, or work with Let’s Build Beds to build beds for children in our community.
Do you have a special skill or a wealth of knowledge you’re eager to share? You can volunteer to teach a class or provide job-specific coaching. Or maybe you’d like to guide a tour or offer a job shadowing experience. All of these contributions help our kids broaden their horizons and envision new possibilities.
Volunteer Teaching: Committed to cultivating a new generation of industry leaders, our team members have generously dedicated their time and expertise to volunteer with Junior Achievement of Northwestern Ohio. Over a twelve-week period, they delivered an extensive manufacturing class, providing practical and industry-specific knowledge to eager students. Their fervor for education and dedication to the community reflect their belief in the transformative power of learning, shaping the future of education in Northwest Ohio.
Children in many after-school programs need support with their education and a consistent mentor to look up to. There’s a myriad of such programs looking for volunteers to assist.
Volunteer Job Coaching: Our team is deeply committed to empowering individuals in our community through job coaching and mentoring. Leaders and business owners can leverage their expertise to provide essential coaching for Lourdes University, UToledo Family Business Center, and the NWO Mentoring Program, thereby creating a significant impact on aspiring young professionals, start-up and new business owners. Please note, these are just a few examples of the coaching opportunities available.
Are you an expert in your field? Contributing your unique skills and experiences through mentorship or teaching classes is a great way to give back. Our collective goal is to uplift others by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to thrive in their chosen careers.
Tours and Job Shadowing: Our aim is to offer a comprehensive program of tours and job shadowing opportunities for individuals of all ages. This initiative allows participants to step beyond their comfort zones, stimulating curiosity and providing a concrete understanding of various career options available in our community. Through this exposure, we encourage young people to envision and pursue a future they might not have considered before.

On a chilly evening in downtown Toledo, we found ourselves amidst the cheer of a Trunk or Treat event. As the children came by, their chattering teeth and red noses spoke louder than their voices. We were offering candies, yet it dawned on us – these kids needed warmth more than sweets. That moment was the seed that grew into the Care for Kids Coat Drive. Instead of candies, we’d hand out warm coats to children who needed them most. What started as a simple act of care has now turned into a mission – to keep the kids of our community warm each winter. We’re proud of our origins, and we’re excited about the journey ahead.
The Care for Kids Coat Drive is an annual charitable event benefitting Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. Every year, October through December, we collect new, gender-neutral coats at various locations around Toledo. In early November, we welcome community members to attend an in-person coat collection event at Designetics, Inc. in Holland, Ohio. This event focuses on food, fun and philanthropy for all.

Our partnership, spanning over two decades, has seen a transformative phase in the last 10 years. Dedication to family and student-centered support has opened avenues for Christian education among families who may have deemed it unattainable. The assistance provided has led to multiple graduates from a single family in our community, surpassing financial barriers. With these obstacles removed, students can wholeheartedly engage in academics and extra-curricular activities, enriching their educational experience and future prospects.
