Welcome to the latest edition of the Care for Kids Nonprofit Spotlight. This month, we’re delighted to feature the YMCA of Greater Toledo and Storer Camps, a longstanding organization serving the communities of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. Founded in 1918 as the summer camp facility of the YMCA of Greater Toledo, the original 8 acres of YMCA Storer Camps has grown to encompass 1,200 acres of pristine forest and lake property.

Each year, YMCA Storer Camps brings thousands of children to this spectacular setting to understand and appreciate nature, to be challenged physically and developmentally, and to learn the values that will help them develop into successful and caring young adults. We spoke with Melissa Di Fiori, VP of Storer Camps at the YMCA of Greater Toledo, to learn more about the importance of camping.

The Benefits of Camp for Children

Engagement in camp activities has been shown to have a profound effect on children’s development, including enhanced social skills, improved self-confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. “Summer camp is more than just a fun getaway for kids,” said Di Fiori. “We see growth and personal development within each of our campers—they’re the best version of themselves when they’re here.”

  • Exposure to Diversity: Summer camp brings together children from various backgrounds, cultures, and communities, exposing them to a world much broader than their immediate surroundings. This diversity enriches their understanding and appreciation of different perspectives and lifestyles, fostering empathy and social inclusiveness from a young age. It’s a place where kids learn that despite our differences, we can all live, play, and grow together harmoniously.
  • Self-Esteem Boost: The camp environment is uniquely structured to provide children with numerous opportunities to succeed in tasks, whether through individual activities or team-based endeavors. Each success, no matter how small, boosts a child’s self-esteem, reinforcing their belief in their abilities and value. In a world that often emphasizes achievement in terms of grades and trophies, camp provides a wholesome space where kids feel valued for who they are, not just what they can do.
  • Attune to Nature: In our digitally saturated world, camp offers a precious chance to disconnect from gadgets and reconnect with nature. Activities like hiking, swimming, and camping under the stars awaken a child’s sense of wonder about the natural world. This connection not only enhances their appreciation for the environment but also teaches them the importance of environmental stewardship.
  • Develops Independence: For many children, camp is the first experience they have away from their parents and the comforts of home. This separation, while challenging, encourages children to step out of their comfort zones, make decisions for themselves, and take responsibility for their actions in a supportive setting. The independence fostered at camp is a critical step in a child’s journey toward self-reliance and adulthood.
  • Instill Leadership Skills: Camp activities are designed to cultivate leadership qualities in children. Through group projects, sports, and leadership roles, children learn the value of teamwork, effective communication, and problem-solving. They discover their leadership style, how to inspire and motivate others, and the importance of setting a positive example. These are skills that they will carry with them into adulthood, benefiting their personal and professional lives.

YMCA Storer Camps takes these experiences a step further by offering a variety of programs that cater to the individual interests and growth needs of each camper.

Programs at Storer Camps

YMCA Storer Camps offers a wide range of programs—from overnight experiences to educational outdoor adventures. There’s something for every child and teen to enjoy and learn from.

  • Summer Overnight Camp: An immersive experience where campers spend several nights at camp, participating in outdoor activities like kayaking and high ropes courses, and building lifelong friendships.
  • Day Camp: Perfect for younger campers or those not ready for overnight stays, day camp offers fun, engaging activities during the day with the comfort of returning home in the evening.
  • Outdoor Education: This program combines learning and adventure, allowing campers to explore environmental science, wildlife, and conservation through hands-on activities.
  • Weekends: Designed for shorter, impactful visits, weekend camps give a taste of camp life, perfect for busy families or first-time campers.
  • Group Retreats: Tailored for schools, organizations, or family groups, these retreats offer customized activities to foster teamwork, leadership, and personal growth.
  • Family Camp: An opportunity for the whole family to experience the magic of camp together.
  • Camp Catch-A-Rainbow: A special program offered free of charge for children being treated for cancer or in remission, providing them with a chance to enjoy typical camp activities in a safe, supportive environment.
  • Equine Program: Allows campers to learn about horse care, riding skills, and the responsibility of looking after these animals while developing confidence and empathy.

Partnering for Inclusion: Ensuring No Child is Turned Away

A cornerstone of the YMCA of Greater and Storer Camp’s philosophy is the commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. By working closely with partner organizations, these institutions ensure that financial constraints do not prevent any child from benefiting from camp experiences.

“Through our partnerships, we’re able to offer scholarships and support to every child so they have the chance to attend camp, regardless of their family’s financial situation,” said Di Fiori. “Last year, we awarded $400,000 in scholarship funds through our annual campaign.”

In addition to its numerous community and corporate partnerships, Camp Catch-A-Rainbow (CCAR) is a proud member of the Children’s Oncology Camping Association International (COCA-I). As of 2023, CCAR has achieved Gold Ribbon Certification through COCA-I, demonstrating its commitment to excellence in serving children with cancer. Furthermore, YMCA Storer Camps is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA), further underscoring its dedication to providing high-quality camp experiences.

The Impact of Community Support

The success and reach of YMCA Storer Camps programs heavily rely on the generous support of our community. Donations, volunteer efforts, and partnerships play a crucial role in sustaining and expanding the opportunities available to children in Toledo.

“It’s the community’s support that breathes life into our programs, allowing us to touch the lives of so many young people,” said Di Fiori. “Care for Kids co-founder Sydney Williams and her family members have been lovely to work with. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with a common goal—shaping the leaders of tomorrow by investing in the youth of today!”

Conclusion

The YMCA of Greater Toledo and Storer Camps represent vital community resources, dedicated to nurturing the physical, emotional, and intellectual growth of children through enriching camp experiences. Their work not only fosters a stronger, more connected community but also instills in our youth the values of leadership, respect for nature, and the importance of healthy living.
